Sea Sports
With more than 13,000 km of coastline, warm 28-degree water and marine life is a great location for all aquatic activities. Many famous beaches benefit safe sea sports but not in monsoon winds.
Hikkaduwa, Tangalle on the west coast, Unawatuna on the south coast and Nilaveli on the east coast are all wonderful places for scuba diving and snorkeling. The south west coast of Sri Lanka is open to the same regular, long distance swells as Indonesia, making it an ideal choice for surfing. Sport fishing is relatively undeveloped, but 1,140 miles of shoreline and warm Indian Ocean currents ensure there is a plethora of fish in the sea, estuaries, mangrove lagoons and rivers.
White Water River Rafting and Canoeing
Some rivers originate from hills offer excellent fresh water sport facilities such as Kalani, Mahawalli, Kalu etc. For example Kelani River in Kitulgala is very popular among adventurers for white water rafting. Madu Ganga in the south for motorboat safari. Popular sites for canoeing are Sorabora lake Mahiyangana in the east, Kalu Ganga River (Black River) and the Kelani Ganga River in the southwest. Canoeing is also possible in ancient man made lakes, large reservoirs, lagoons and rivers that run swiftly down to sea.
Wild Life Jeep Safari
Before plantation era the island covered more than 70 per cent of forest cover but now only 20 per cent. That is national parks, forest reserves, and sanctuaries etc. The distribution of wildlife is mainly in national parks. There are seventeen national parks of Sri Lanka and more than 4000 elephants in the country. There are two national parks to see leopards, Willpattu in northwest and Yala in southeast arid zones. Minneriya, Udawalawa and Wasgamuwa are the best places to visit wild elephants. Maduru Oya national park will be open for visitors in near future with extra values like Vadda village and hot water springs.
Caving and Pot Holing
Sri Lanka is under developed as a caving region. This fascinating activity is becoming popular. About 45 main caves have being reported. Most of which seems to be formed in granite or gneiss. It is consist with just one or two chambers that were commonly used as dwellings in prehistoric times. Usually ash and shells are found there because snail cocking of prehistoric humans. There are number of limestone pot holes are around Kandy in the central and all around Sri Lanka for pot holing. Some of them are with stalagmite and stalactite, underground water ponds, waterfalls, and some distance long. The cave fauna is consisting with large spices of bats, geckos, frogs etc. Nightlife is not mysterious if you interested.
