In a trekking tour breakfast is the most important. You have to choose Sri Lankan breakfast or usual continental breakfast Sri Lankan breakfasts are milk rice, hoppers, and steam hoppers, Rotti, Pittu etc with fruits and tea or coffee. Milk-rice is the popular traditional common breakfast. A hopper from rice flour with coconut milk and egg hoppers is with egg. Rotti is coconut and wheat flour roasted on a plate with chilly. Pittu is steamed flours like rice, Madu, Kurrakan, mixed with coconut and salt. Continental breakfast is toasted bread, jam and butter, banana and egg with tea or coffee as usual.
Lunch is not essential to be heavy. Biscuit or any other light foods are also enough. But Rice and curry is the main lunch. Rice has plenty of varieties. Samba rice is white and polished. Brown rice is popular in southern province and very healthy. Indian Basmati rice is for fried rice. Yellow rice is cooked on the base of coconut milk and delicately flavored by spices. The types of curries like vegetable, fish or meat is depend on peoples interest. Curries are hot and spicy. Ingredients of curries include chili powder, fresh chilies, cinnamon, turmeric, curry powder, curry leaves, onions, garlic, ginger and coconut milk. Most of the species has a great Ayurvedic value but they are fiery hot, so test out a small portion first. All the curries are cooked on the base of coconut milk and flavored by liberal use of that spices. People of coastal regions and villagers close proximity to fresh water lakes are expert in preparing fish curries.
Alternative fruit lunch is with different varieties of fruits, like different kinds of mangoes, pineapple, water melon, papaya, wood apple, different kinds of bananas, rambuttan, mangos tin etc. Fruit juice can be preferred as mixed fruit and available in restaurants any kinds of fruit juices. Dorian is a wayside fruit is bit smelly. Can be found large number of fruit selling shops in wayside with king coconut.
Dinner is on your request in restaurants or place where you stay. When camping, barbeque can be arranged. In a lake bed fresh fish barbeque or meat and dinner is again rice and curry or noodles.
Main Drink of Sri Lanka other than water is our product, Fine Ceylon Tea. Sri Lankan says 'plain tea' but for English black tea is without milk. Plain tea with palm jugglery is delicious. Crushed ginger can add more flavors to the tea. Coffee is also on request anywhere. Toddy and Arrack is the main alcohol. Toddy is from a palm tree call Kitul in the central highland and arrack, coconut toddy from coconut trees around the costal area. Sri Lanka has some beer, wine factories and a chain of Vine Stores. Most popular brand is Lion beer.
